Some women could wake up, after a night of crying, and appear rested. Kate woke up after a night of tears and looked like death personified. She stood in the bathroom, staring at herself in the mirror covering the medicine cabinet, and cringed at what she saw. Her green eyes were bloodshot sclera lined with broken blood vessels.

As if her eyes weren’t bad enough, the lining of her nose could give Rudolph a run for his money. Her skin appeared pale against the redness of her eyes and nose. Her hair stuck out in places it had no business sticking out in.

“Isn’t this an insult to injury? I bet he got out of bed looking like a million bucks.” Her voice sounded scratchy and held a distinct nasal whine to it. It was a sign that she should start the day over.

After briefly considering starting the day over, she opted to go down for breakfast instead. With a sigh, she left the bathroom and opened the bedroom door leading to the hall. She stuck her head out the door, looking both ways, making sure she didn’t see anyone before leaving the room and working her way down toward the kitchen.

She heard a sound coming from the room she knew Holland was staying in. As much as she wanted to be happy for her friend, the amorous sounds coming from behind the door only caused more pain. She pushed any thought of Zane from her mind. She refused to think about him. Her emotions tumbled too close to the surface to think about what had transpired the night before. Anger and hurt went hand in hand, only adding to her emotional turbulence.

The scent of coffee filtered through the air as she approached the kitchen. Kate knew that on a normal morning, coffee sounded akin to heaven. The current morning, however, was a chocolate cake morning. She assured herself she would run an extra mile that day, but she’d consume chocolate cake for breakfast, even if it meant going to the store to pick one up. A lady should never deny her emotional needs.

With her head buried deep in the refrigerator, she heard the crackling sound of a vortex opening. The sound only meant one thing. Her mother. Kate cursed her luck.

“Hello, goddess,” she mumbled without turning around. Her heart skipped a beat with unadulterated pleasure at the sight of a cake in the back of the fridge. She grabbed it with both hands and pulled it out. As she turned around, she saw that her mother had not come alone.

“Hello, Degala, so nice to see you again.” Kate tried not to pay too close attention to the solemn look they each bore on their faces.

“Sit down, Kate,” Noxia commanded. Sometimes a person just knew when they would not like words about to come out of someone else’s mouth.

“If you are giving me bad news, I need a fork. I’m already fairly wrecked today.” Kate walked over to the drawer by the sink, grabbing a fork before going to sit down with the entire cake platter.
